What are the materials required to perform percutaneous vertebroplasty (PVP)?
First, a clinical evaluation is performed to confirm the presence of compressed fracture. Spine x-ray, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), computed tomography (CT) scan can be used to confirm the diagnosis. Then a set of equipment is used to perform the procedure. Although there are multiple vertebroplasty kits available, the basic equipment in all these kits are same which include: • 11-guage needle • Syringe • X-ray equipment • Acrylic cement which includes polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) • Sterile barium or tungsten powder as an opacifier • A device that is used to deliver the cement Other equipment that may be used include intravenous line, ultrasound machine and a device that monitors heart rate and blood pressure
