What is the postprocedural care once the percutaneous vertebroplasty (PVP) has been performed?
After removing the vertebroplasty needles, manual pressure is applied for several minutes to prevent the risk of hematoma, followed by a sterile dressing. Patients are kept in supine position for 2 hours after the procedure and are given analgesics for post-operative pain. Some patients may also require muscle relaxants or physical therapy in case of muscle spasm. Patients with osteoporosis should be followed closely after the treatment as the risks of developing a second fracture is common. They may also need medical management such as antiresorptives even after the procedure to prevent further fractures. Lifestyle modifications (exercise, reduced alcohol consumption), dietary supplementations (vitamin D and calcium) are also encouraged.
