In What conditions are percutaneous vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty indicated?
Percutaneous vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty are radiological procedures used to treat painful vertebral compression fractures in the spinal column of patients in whom medical therapies such as analgesic use or bed rest fail. The treatments are indicated in condition as follows: • Painful, non-healing osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures • Painful vertebral hemangiomas • Vertebral osteonecrosis • Kyphoplasty is more preferred in acute compression fractures due to trauma and osteoporosis • osteolytic bone metastasis or multiple myeloma • fractures secondary to infections such as osteomyelitis, solid tumors or vascular lesions • reinforcement of pathologically weak vertebrae before any surgical stabilization procedure
