What are the key diagnostic criteria and definitive treatment of compartment syndrome?
If a patient presents with extreme pain in leg or forearm which is out of proportion, there is pallor, paresthesia and pulselessness, pressure in limb is checked. If the pressure of the higher then 30mmHg, there is a suspicion of compartment syndrome. If the pressure is 20mmHg more than diastolic pressure of the patient definitive diagnosis of compartment syndrome is made. To treat the syndrome is treated by surgery. The procedure done is called fasciotomy. In this procedure careful opening of the compartment is done. Skin and fascia are opened to relieve the pressure. This saves the involved tissue. Use of anti-inflammatory medicines and physiotherapy is also suggested. Shoe inserts are also recommended when dealing with chronic compartmental syndrome induced by exercise
