Abdominal Compartment Syndrome

Abdominal compartment syndrome is characterized by sustained elevated intra-abdominal pressure. Normal intra-abdominal pressure is 0-5 mm Hg. Intraabdominal hypertension develops when pressure rises above 12 mm Hg. When pressure reaches > 20 mm Hg, abdominal compartment syndrome ensues. Abdominal compartment syndrome may occur as a complication of severe burns.
