👉The human mouth is full of bacteria. These bacteria, along with mucus and other particles in the mouth, constantly form a sticky, colorless film on teeth called plaque. Brushing and flossing help get rid of this.✅ However, plaque that isn't removed overtime can harden and form tartar (calculus) which is seen in the image above where brushing will be useless Only a professional cleaning (scaling) by a dentist or hygienist may remove tartar. The longer plaque and tartar are on teeth, the more harmful they become The plaque bacteria cause inflammation of gums aka gingivitis" where they become red, swollen and can bleed easily. When gingivitis is not treated, it can progress to periodontitis where gums pull away from teeth and form spaces (pockets) that become infected. The body's immune system fights the bacteria as plaque spreads and grows below the gum line. Bacterial toxins and the body's natural response to infection start to break down the bone and connective tissue that hold teeth in place. If not treated, the bones, gums, and tissue that support the teeth are compromised. The teeth then may eventually become loose and removed from the mouth. 💀🔪
