What is the role of antibiotic therapy in the treatment of rhinosinusitis?
Antibiotic Therapy for Treatment of Rhinosinusitis • Mild and moderate bacterial rhinosinusitis do not need antibiotic therapy. They resolve on their own. • When symptoms of rhinosinusitis persist for 10 or more days or they are worsening during period of 3-4 days then consider antibiotic treatment. • Duration of antibiotic therapy is 5-7 days in adults and 10-14 days for children. • Start with first-line antibiotics e.g. amoxicillin/clavulanate. • Give doxycycline and respiratory fluoroquinolones e.g. moxifloxacin and levofloxacin, in penicillin-allergic patients.
