How is laryngotracheitis treated?
Treatment Protocol for Laryngotracheitis • Admit the patient, especially children, in the nearest hospital. Hospitalization is necessary in children who develop hypoxemia, volume depletion, airway compromise and respiratory fatigue. • Manage mild cases at home with moist air inhalation. Install humidifiers for moistening air. • Use pulse oximetry and visual observation to monitor respiratory fatigue. • Administer humidified oxygen according to pulse oximetry results.It is important in all patients who develop hypoxemia. Those patients who do not need oxygen therapy, use a cool-mist humidifier. • There may be need of intubation therefore keep equipments and personnel ready. • Administer IV or oral glucorticoids to reduce symptoms and shorten hospitalization in moderate to severe croup. • Administer racemic epinephrine to dilate the airways temporarily.
