Asthma is a long-term inflammatory disease of the airways of the lungs. It is characterized by variable and recurring symptoms, reversible airflow obstruction, and easily triggered bronchospasms. Symptoms include episodes of wheezing, coughing, chest tightness, and shortness of breath. diagnosis of asthma are: FeNO test which you breathe into a machine that measures the level of nitric oxide in your breath, that is a sign of inflammation in your lungs. Second is spirometry which you blow into a machine that measures how fast you can breathe out and how much air you can hold in your lungs. Treatments are: Long-term asthma control medications like Inhaled corticosteroids, Leukotriene modifiers, Combination inhalers, Theophylline. Or Quick-relief (rescue) medications like short acting beta agonist, anticholonergic agent, and oral and intravenous corticosteroids. We also have Allergy medications like allergy shots, and biologic medications. Lastly we have Bronchial thermoplasty which is not suitable for all patients not widely available. Ps: An asthma attack is a sudden worsening of asthma symptoms caused by the tightening of muscles around your airways. This tightening is called a bronchospasm. During the asthma attack, the lining of the airways also becomes swollen or inflamed and thicker mucus -- more than normal -- is produced.
