This patient was presented with severe deformity of the left foot known as hallux valgus (bunion). We corrected the angle of the first metatarsal bone and saw off the excess bone medially. A bunion is a deformity of the joint connecting the big toe to the foot. It is characterized by medial deviation of the first metatarsal bone and lateral deviation of the hallux. The bump itself is partly due to the swollen bursal sac or an osseous anomaly on the metatarsophalangeal joint. The larger part of the bump is a normal part of the head of the first metatarsal bone that has tilted sideways to stick out at its distal end. The exact cause is unclear. Proposed factors include wearing overly tight shoes, family history, and rheumatoid arthritis. . . FOLLOW us @medicalpedia for more exciting medical cases! TAG a friend ๐
