A Ghost Heart!

Researchers at the Texas Heart Institute had created a ghost heart by stripping all the living cells from a pig heart using a soap solution. Employing the Retrograde coronary perfusion method, they pumped the soap solution in opposite direction of the blood flow, which bursts the cells and leaves only the protein structure behind.The hope is to seed the scaffold with recipient's own stem cells to prevent the graft rejection and a lifelong intake of immune suppresants. These scientists have successfully implanted tissue-engineered hearts into rats and pigs in the hope to create personalized human hearts and help relieve the shortage of donor organs.
