Volkmann's Ischemic Contracture

Volkmann's Ischemic Contracture

This permanent contracture is a dreaded complication of vascular insult of the upper limb. It is seen in supracondylar fractures of the humerus which compromise the brachial artery. It is also seen in neglected compartment syndrome and crush injuries. Ischemia results in deformities of the flexor tendons of the forearm along with intrinsic muscles of the hand. There is coexisting neurological deficit, especially involving the ulnar and median nerves.
