Fracture of the humeral shaft after falling off a tree!!!
These type of fractures aren't the most common (only about 3-5% of all fractures) but definitely worth mentioning. Most humeral shaft fractures occur as a result of a direct blow to the upper arm (transverse fractures), or Indirect trauma from a fall or a twisting action like arm wrestling, which are the result of spiral or oblique fractures. Now, a common associated injury is damage to the radial nerve, due to its close relationship to the posterior aspect of the bone, running in the spiral groove between the lateral and medial heads of the triceps muscle. Less commonly, the brachial artery, median and ulnar nerves are damaged. Shaft fractures are fairly easy to diagnose based on radiographs. Treatment is done with a supportive/hanging cast followed by supportive splint and infrequently require open reduction. In more severe cases, internal fixation using plates and screws might be needed.Photo by : @eybtmk
