Comparing the damaged aortic valve to a prosthetic valve moments before replacement!

The aortic valve is the gate between the aorta and left ventricle and can be damaged due to a bunch of reasons such as rheumatic fever, infective endocarditis and myxomatous degeneration leading to progressive chronic deterioration of the patients condition due to increasing obstruction. The valve can be repaired rather than replaced, especially for minimally damaged valves. This case shows a super dilated aortic valve which caused severe regurgitation of blood from the aorta back to the left ventricle due to failure to close during diastole. On the other hand, a stenotic valve fails to open properly during systole so blood essentially builds up in the ventricle. The poorly working aortic valve is replaced with an artificial valve that can be either biological (tissue) or mechanical. Biological valves (the one shown above) are made mainly from pig, cow, or human heart tissue. They don't last as long as mechanical valves which are made man-made materials, such as titanium or carbon, but one should be on a lifelong anticoagulation therapy with warfarin or aspirin.
