Congenital rubella syndrome

Incidence : less than 25 percent of infants born to women infected with rubella virus in the first trimester of pregnancy Manifestations: *triad of microcephaly, patent ductus arteriosus and cataract *cerebral palsy, congenital heart disease, nerve deafness, thrombocytopenia *type 1 DM is frequent late manifestation *moderate and severe cases are recognizable at birth *mild cases may not be detected for months or years after birth Management (if detected by ultrasonography) : therapeutic abortion
