Excessive accumulation of fluid in the pericardial space making it difficult for the heart to function normally.
Cardiac tamponade is a condition where space formed by parietal and visceral heart wrappers is filled with fluid or blood or even blood clots. this results in the heart being unable to pump blood optimally and can end in cardiac arrest
This is a case of cardiac tamponade! 😱 A #Cardiac_tamponade is a serious medical condition in which blood or fluids fill the space between the sac that encases the heart and the heart muscle. This increase in fluid presses against the heart, placing extreme pressure on it and preventing the ventricles from expanding fully! Less oxygen-rich blood is pumped to the rest of the body as a result. The lack of blood getting to the heart and the rest of the body can eventually cause shock, organ failure, and cardiac arrest! Cardiac tamponade is a medical emergency and should be addressed immediately if it is suspected! Common causes include blunt trauma, gunshot/stab wounds, accidental perforation after a cardiac catheterization, or a ruptured aortic aneurysm.
