Neonatal lupus symptoms are temporary and include a distinct skin rash (often ring-shaped, with central clearing, on the face and scalp), low blood cell counts (anemia, thrombocytopenia, neutropenia), elevated liver enzymes, and, most critically, congenital heart block. The heart block is a permanent and potentially severe complication that may be detected in utero. While symptoms typically resolve within months as maternal antibodies disappear, the heart block can persist and may require a pacemaker.
