Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) can affect almost any body system, which may affect dental management. Oral mucosal lesions are seen in about 20%. The most important of the many autoantibodies seen in SLE are antinuclear factors. Only antibodies against double-stranded DNA (anti-dsDNA) are peculiar to SLE, but many other antinuclear factors are found in other connective tissue diseases. Clinically, the features vary according to the main organ systems affected.
