CT scan and The Beatles

CT scan and The Beatles

What’s the link between the CT scan and The Beatles? ⁣ Many people have had their lives saved by the pioneering scanning device, which enables doctors to view the internal structures of patients’ bodies by taking very thin x-ray ‘slices’ across the body. What am I talking about? The CT scan.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ 1st October 1971, a lady with a suspected frontal lobe tumour was scanned with a prototype CT scanner at Atkinson Morley Hospital in London. This early CT scan was extremely pixelated but just clear enough to note a possible mass.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Sir Godfrey Hounsfield, an electrical engineer involved in developing the CT scan conducted his work in the Central Research Laboratory, a facility near Heathrow airport that was part of the EMI music group, the company that owned The Beatles’ music. Having sold 200 million of the Beatles singles, EMI was able to fund Hounsfield to do his research and the scanner was ready be used in hospitals in the 1970’s! The Beatles really were awesome!⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Pic: (left) First ever CT scan with red arrow at suspected tumor; (right) CT scan now with orange arrow pointing to scalp hematoma.
