Vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty are both minimally invasive procedures to treat painful vertebral compression fractures. Although kyphoplasty is often used interchangeably with vertebroplasty and is a subset of it, the procedure of kyphoplasty is slightly differet from vertebroplasty. In vertebroplasty, image guidance such as fluoroscopy is used to inject polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) into the fractured bone through a hollow needle while kyphoplasty uses a device called balloon tamp which is inserted through a needle followed by inflation of the balloon in order to make a space or a cavity. Once there is enough space, the balloon is removed and bone cement is injected into the cavity. Inserting the balloon also helps in restoring vertebral body height and spine alignment. Spine jack is a new system which can also be used to correct vertebral height by inserting an implant that mechanically augments the height of the vertebrae followed by bone cement injection.
