Kerion is a fungal infection of the scalp that is caused by tinea capitis. The most commonly affected group is children. It is usually acquired through direct contact and shared objects. Kerion is characterized by mushy area on the scalp. In addition, pustules and abscesses may also be present. Alopecia is seen at the affected site. Fever may also be present. The kerion is managed by oral antifungals. Topical antifungals are not usually effective due to deep seated infection in the hair follicles.
