Broken heart is not just metaphorical. There is an actual condition that goes by this name. The precipitants of broken heart syndrome are sudden physical stress, emotional stress, and rapid weakening of heart muscles. Broken heart syndrome is also known as Takotsubo Cardiomyopathy.
