Medical Management of Psoriasis

The aim of the treatment of the psoriasis is to slow the growth of skin cells and removal of scales. The management plan for psoriasis is individualized. Following drugs might be used: 1. Corticosteroids It is indicated in mild to moderate cases of psoriasis. Topical steroids are used during flare-ups. They are used on alternative days to prevent flare-ups. 2. Vitamin D analogues These agents slow the growth of skin cells. It may be used in combination with corticosteroids. 3. Retinoids It is used once or twice daily. 4. Calcineurin inhibitors Tacrolimus and pimecrolimus is used on skin that is sensitive to corticosteroids and retinols. 5. Salicylic acid The shampoo containing the salicylic acid is indicated in scalp psoriasis. 6. Coal tar Coal tar effectively reduces inflammation, scaling, and itching. 7. Anthralin It is effective in removing scales.
