Shigellosis is one of the major causes of dysentery. Though uncommon in developed world, it can cause complications in under-privileged areas. Common complications of shigellosis are: 1. Postinfectious Arthritis It is associated with S. flexneri strain of shigella. It can last for months to years. In addition to joint pain, eye symptoms and burning micturition may be present. 2. Bacteremia People with compromised immune system e.g., cancer and HIV patients are prone to develop blood stream infections secondary to shigellosis. 3. Seizures It is usually present in children. The pathogenesis is not yet established. No treatment is required. 4. Hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) S. dysenteriae produces a toxin that destroys erythrocytes.
