Malaria is caused by unicellular parasite called plasmodium that lives in the intestine of Anopheles mosquito. It has harsh symptoms ranging from fever to death. In severe cases the spleen which is responsible for filtering the blood gets jam packed with infected red blood cells giving the pictured appearance.
