Could be caused by a great many reasons. Not just the obvious ones like the ones listed above. Mag deficiency, K deficiency, venous insufficiency, lack of protein, dehydration. Etc….
The detailed physical exam can help immensely to differentiate systemic causes such as CHF (common findings are jugular venous distension, dyspnea, bilateral crackles, history of heart disease), liver disease (jaundice, ascites, history of hepatitis and alcohol use disorder), renal disease etc. And from there we can differentiate between different types of edema.
