Pitting Edema

Pitting Edema

Pitting edema is a condition which occurs when excess fluid builds up in the body, causing swelling. When pressure is applied to the swollen area, a “pit”, or indentation, will remain. Although it can affect any part of the body, pitting edema usually occurs in legs, feet, and ankles By: https://www.instagram.com/p/CQd9lORBh24/?utm_medium=copy_link

Could be caused by a great many reasons. Not just the obvious ones like the ones listed above. Mag deficiency, K deficiency, venous insufficiency, lack of protein, dehydration. Etc….

Renal edema and cardiac edema how will you differentiate?

The detailed physical exam can help immensely to differentiate systemic causes such as CHF (common findings are jugular venous distension, dyspnea, bilateral crackles, history of heart disease), liver disease (jaundice, ascites, history of hepatitis and alcohol use disorder), renal disease etc. And from there we can differentiate between different types of edema.
