Nasogastric tube or NG tube is a tube synthesized from plastic or silicon. It is inserted through nasal opening to access gastric cavity. The purpose of this tube insertion is to provide patient with nutrition. The indication of placing a nasogastric are: 1) malnourished or patients at risk of malnutrition 2) in patients with functional and accessible gastrointestinal tract that is patients cannot consume adequate amount to absorb nutrients. The common diagnostic indications are: evaluation of amount of upper GI bleed, aspiration of gastric contents such as in lavage, administration of contrast, collection of gastric cancer cells. Therapeutic indications include: gastric decompression like in subacute intestinal obstruction, aspiration of gastric contents, administration of medications, feeding, bowel irrigation and after corrosive intake.
