Gangrene

Type of necrosis due to a lack of blood supply in tissues caused by an infection, injury or infection. It occurs in the extremities  such as fingers, toes and limbs. The earlier gangrene is identified and treated, the better chances of recovery. Risk Factors: - diabetes - smoking - obesity - serious frostbite - raynaud's phenomenon - weak immune system - trauma - peripheral artery disease - narrowed arteries Symptoms: - swelling - blisters - cold skin - skin discoloration - foul smelling discharge leaking from sore - pain - fever Diagnosis: - blood tests - surgery - cultures - imaging tests Treatment: - surgery to restore blood flow and remove dead tissue - antibiotics to treat infection - hyperbaric oxygen therapy - maggot therapy
