Testicular torsion is the twisting of the spermatic cord leading to arterial occlusion and venous outflow obstruction; the resulting ischemia can lead to testicular infarction. It is characterized by severe testicular pain, swollen and tender scrotum, and an elevated testicle (as twisting occurs, the testicle moves to a higher position in the scrotum). Testicular torsion is a SURGICAL EMERGENCY. Immediate detorsion and orchiopexy are done (should be performed bilaterally to prevent torsion in the contralateral testicle). If surgery is delayed beyond 6 hours, the infraction may occur, and the testicle may not be salvageable.
