Hand of Benediction- Median Nerve Injury

Hand of Benediction- Median Nerve Injury

When the median nerve is injured in the elbow region, flexion of the proximal and distal interphalangeal joints of 1st-3rd digits is lost due to paralysis of flexor digitorum superficialis and lateral half of flexor digitorum profundus respectively. Flexion of distal interphalangeal joints of digits 3 and 4 is still possible because the medial part of flexor digitorum profundus is supplied by ulnar nerve. Flexion at metacarpophalangeal joints of 2nd and 3rd digits is also lost due to paralysis of 1st and 2nd lumbricals which are supplied by digital branches of median nerve. When such a person attempts to make a fist, 2nd and 3rd fingers remain partially extended and a hand of benediction is formed. Image via: https://images.app.goo.gl/6vFhiAHgrtffQhw36
