The wisdom behind wisdom teeth!

The wisdom behind wisdom teeth!

The third molars, also commonly known as the wisdom teeth are the last teeth to develop and erupt in the oral cavity typically between the ages of 17-25 years. Anthropologist believe these teeth were especially helpful for our prehistoric ancestors who required heavy biting forces to chew coarse leaves, nuts and seeds that comprised a bulk of their diet. With evolution caused by changes in diet over time and the anatomical changes resulting in diminished lower jaw size, wisdom teeth do not have enough room to erupt and hence get stuck in the jaw. They are a ‘’scar of human evolution’’. At present, they aren’t just pointless- they can also become problematic and that’s when they eventually need to be removed! Source:
