This photo shows an orbitomaxillary resection, or the surgical extraction of the orbit and part of the superior maxilla! The term used for surgical removal of the eye is enucleation and it is commonly used to remove eyes with extra large-sized tumors and those with severe glaucoma or choroidal melanoma that was metastasized from another location. In this case, biopsy confirmed the presence of cancerous cells. A CT study of the sinuses revealed a soft-tissue mass and erosion of the inferior and medial walls of the right orbit. An MR imaging study suggested orbital and possibly cranial invasion. It was decided to surgically excise the tumor and the surgical defect required a free-flap reconstruction.
