Cheiloplasty

Cheiloplasty, or cleft lip, is the second most common embryonic deformity. A cleft lip repair corrects the facial defect and prevents future problems with breathing, speaking, and eating. Most cleft lip cases have no known cause, but there is a strong genetic reason behind them. In most cases cleft lip is isolated in the family with no obvious causation. Cleft lip risks are higher when both parents are over 30 years of age. There has also been ties to environmental causes, as well as medications that may affect developing embryos. There are multiple types of cleft lip, from a small groove on the border of the upper lip to a large deformity extending from the floor of the nostril to the upper jawbone. Cleft lip repair can be performed on healthy infants and can be initiated at any age. However, optimal results occur when the first operation is performed between two and six months of age. There aren’t any major health problems associated with this reconstructive surgery.Surgical goals for cleft lip include symmetrically shaped nostrils, and natural lips that have a functional muscle. Natural lip results can be achieved depending on the skill of the surgeon, accurate presurgery markings, alignment of bones within affected area, and healthy healing.Surgery is the only option in correcting this deformity, there are no other alternatives.
