This laparotomy was typically done before the era of laparoscopy and is performed in order to obtain information that is not available via clinical diagnostic methods and is usually performed in patients with acute or unexplained abdominal pain, in patients who have sustained abdominal trauma, and occasionally for staging in patients with a malignancy and locating an active bleeding. Once the pathology has been diagnosed, the exploratory surgery may continue as a therapeutic procedure.
