Reconstructive replantation of a severely damaged hand!

Reconstructive replantation of a severely damaged hand!

This poor guy had his hand chopped off due to an accident and underwent reattachment (replantation) of the amputated hand, which was placed in sealed plastic bag and ice water, back to its place. Replantation is the surgical reattachment of a body part, most commonly a finger, hand or arm, that has been completely cut from a person's body. It is possible to restore the function and survival of the replanted part, with the general operative sequence being the vascular shunt first to minimize ischemia time, bone fixation with or without shortening if needed, extensor tendon repair, artery repair, venous anastomoses, flexor tendon repair, nerve repair, and skin with fasciotomy in some cases to relieve tension or pressure and treat possible acute compartment syndrome. Nowadays, Technological advances and the use of the microscope have made possible the replantation of parts including thumbs, fingers, ears, scalps, facial parts, and genitalia.
