This guy had a necrotizing fasciitis infection of his retroperitoneum that spread to infect the kidney. An urgent dorsal lumbotomy revealed that the kidney was black and dead (necrotized) on the outside, only alive on the inside. Retroperitoneal necrotizing fasciitis is an uncommon soft tissue infection that causes necrosis and is often fatal and better prognosis relays on early diagnosis. It may rapidly spread to any part in the body, leading to extensive necrosis of the retroperitoneum or even spread further and lead to a limb amputation. Early clinical diagnosis and rapid surgical intervention with extensive debridement of the necrotizing tissues might be life saving. Photo by @mikesurg1
