The following figure shows a , check out the stretched and bulging section in the wall of the aorta!Aortic aneurysm is defined as an enlargement (dilation) of the aorta to greater than 1.5 times normal size.Thoracic aortic aneurysms are located within the thoracic cavity and they often grow slowly and usually without symptoms, making them difficult to detect. As the aorta expands, the pressure on its wall increases, increasing the risk of rupture, which may cause a massive internal bleeding and rapid death. Some aneurysms will never rupture. Many start small and stay small, although many expand over time. Screening using ultrasound scanning is highly useful in high risk patients. The main aim is to detect an aneurysm on time and prevent its rupture by an urgent surgical repair.
