mumps: parotid swelling A viral infection; paramyxovirus Prodromal period 1_2 days Spread via airborne droplets of infected saliva Symptoms are fever, nausea , headache, severe pain in parotid region exacerbated by jaw movement. Symptoms resolve in 5 to 10 days. Complications: pancreatitis, orchitis, oophritis,deafness , and meningitis Complications are rare in children but most likely in adults. Preventive measure: hygiene, Mumps vaccine (MMR) One infection confers life long immunity. Management: supportive Gargles , soft food and extra fluids Pain relief: acetaminophen *Aspirin is c/i in children bcz of risk of reye syndrome.
