This man named Tim had a cancerous tumor that had grown to the size of a melon and had it rebuilt by a pioneering surgeon!! Tim, 38, was diagnosed with Synovial Sarcoma, an extremely rare form of soft tissue cancer, which left him with the grapefruit-sized tumor growing on his face. An amazing transformation story about a cancer patient who lost half his face and had it reconstructed by plastic surgeon, Dr. Kongkrit Chaiyasate. After losing half his face from removing the cancerous tumor, he had his face rebuilt by a pioneering surgeon. McGrath had been living with exposed flesh on his face since 2015 with several failed attempts at facial reconstruction. Tim was first diagnosed with Synovial Sarcoma in February 2014 after complaining of severe jaw pain. An MRI revealed an egg sized tumour however Tim turned down surgery and spent the following 18 months seeking none surgical alternatives. At the end of May 2015 the tumor doubled in size and he had to have a tracheotomy fitted to enable him to breathe and a feeding tube so he could eat, because the tumor had invaded the space in his mouth. He was admitted to hospital where he remained for almost seven weeks following the initial 30 hour operation to remove and then reconstruct his face. To eradicate all the cancerous cells, the surgery required the removal of his eye, ear, half of his jawbone, muscle, tissue, skin and some of his skull. Plastic surgeon, Dr. Chaiyasate, managed to rebuild McGrath's face using flesh from his forearm and leg. Following the successful surgery, McGrath called Dr. Chaiyasate a "human angel." He has performed five successful surgeries for McGrath which have greatly improved his quality of life. Future operations may allow McGrath to eat and drink without tubes again. Some of the complications could have possibly been avoided had he chosen to have the operation when the tumour was first diagnosed.
People have their reasons for declining medical treatment, they may be dumb reasons, a previously bad experience, or lack of education. Thankfully the pt can live hopefully a productive, societal contributing life, albeit disfigured. the surgeon is his angel and an angel to others.
