Lordosis vs. kyphosis

Lordosis vs. kyphosis

Lordosis is a disorder when a patient’s lower back has an excessive lordotic curve. Usually physicians say that the lower back looks like the letter c due to the excessive inward curve toward the belly button. As you can see in the image the normal spinal structure is straighter than the lordotic spine Lordosis is commonly found in frequent runner. Obesity can be a cause. Osteoporosis can also be a cause of lordosis. Lordosis is found in pregnant woman too. Lordosis is treated usually with medication, physical therapy, exercise to improve posture, and back braces. Kyphosis Kyphosis is the opposite of lordosis. Kyphosis is when usually the thoracic vertebra are hunch over. Instead of the lumbar lordotic curve of lordosis, kyphosis is the rounding out of the thoracic level of vertebrae Kyphosis is commonly found in patients with a history of spinal injuries : fractures, broken, or crushed vertebrae can result in kyphosis. The Big Picture: Kyphosis and lordosis can lead to a long and dreadful future of back complications. Eventually the back could become so weak that you may have to take more action than you thought. Diseases like spinal stenosis, osteoporosis, and spondylolisthesis could be the result of this under-looked disorder.
