We’re doing some more reproduction today at REV Med! Basically Ectopic Pregnancy is when the fertilized egg implants somewhere other than the main cavity of the uterus. Possible causes of an ectopic pregnancy include a damaged fallopian tube, hormonal imbalances, abnormal development of the fertilized egg and it most often occurs in the Fallopian tubes. Listed below are some of the sites & their incidence with features. Ampullary - Incidence 70-80%, Most common subtype along with others (Isthmus, or fibril regions): empty uterine cavity, tubal ring sign Interstitial - Incidence 2-4%, Gestational sac eccentric in myometrial portion of fallopian tube, Positive Interstitial line sign (interstitial portion of tube) Cervical - Incidence <1%, Hourglass appearance of cervix, fetal cardiac activity positive (cervical canal) Ovarian - Incidence 1-3% Rare, assisted reproductive techniques, follow-up scans show crenulated margins (ovarian cortex) Abdominal - Incidence 0.9-1.4%, Primary: the first and only implantation occurs on a peritoneal surface, Secondary: the first implantation begins in the tubal lumen; the pregnancy is later aborted and then re-implants on a peritoneal surface. Ultrasound often less yielding, MRI preferred method. Learn a whole lot with upcoming videos, make sure you’re subscribed to our YouTube channel!
