Sigmoid volvulus

Sigmoid volvulus

Male on his 30, presenting with obstruction symptoms. Intraoperative findings are sigmoid volvulus. Hartmann's procedure was chosen. In Volvulus, obstruction caused by twisting of the intestines more than 180 degrees. 1-5% of large bowel obstructions, sigmoid involved in up to 90% of cases. Radiographic features are "bent inner tube" appearance, dilated sigmoid loop with limb pointing towards the RLQ, "coffee bean" appearance with central doubled wall component, on Bird's beak on barium enema.

It always amazes me that that much bowel(megacolon too) is contained in the abdomen because once it comes through the incision there is no chance it will ever go back in!!!(not that anyone would want to put it back inπŸ˜‚πŸ˜·)
