One method of periodontal ligament engineering under development. Periodontal cells are extracted from a patient’s tooth and grown on temperature responsive culture plates in vitro. Upon lowering the temperature on these cultures, the confluent layer of cells spontaneously lifts off of the plate as a sheet of cells with intact cell junctions. These sheets are then implanted with various treatments to attempt regeneration of the periodontal tissues. (Modified from Yamato M, Okano T: Mater. Today. 7, 42, 2004.)
