Teratoma

Teratoma

Teratoma: It is a type of tumor that can contain various types of tissues in the body such as hair, muscle and bone. Treatment usually involves surgery. In rare cases of malignant teratomas, chemotherapy or radiation therapy may be required. In this case, a 52-year-old woman presented with a painless swelling on her scalp that had gradually increased since childhood. An MRI showed multiple nodules of varying sizes floating in this large cyst, giving it a “bag of little balls” appearance (shown). After completing the surgical excision, the cyst was observed to contain sebum-like material, hard tooth-like structures, and several hairs. Histopathological examination confirmed the diagnosis of mature cystic teratoma, which are commonly found in gonadal tissues and in the head and neck region. On the head, they have a predilection for the orbit and scalp. .
