The term "bird beak sign" refers to a tapering, beak-like appearance observed in medical imaging, and it can indicate various conditions depending on the location. It is most commonly associated with achalasia of the esophagus, where the lower end of the esophagus narrows, resembling a bird's beak on a barium swallow. However, it can also be seen in other conditions, such as sigmoid volvulus, where the sigmoid colon twists and obstructs, and in caecal volvulus. Additionally, a similar appearance can be seen in aortic dissection and in some cases of gastric volvulus.
