30 Year Old Breast Implant

30 Year Old Breast Implant

What does a 30 year old breast implant look like after it’s removed? Above is a silicone breast implant that was placed approximately 30 years ago. The patient developed a capsular contracture around the implant resulting in painful distortion of the shape of her breast. She presented for implant and capsule removal. This can be done “enbloc", or all together. Or, the implant can be removed first and the capsule after. Capsules are naturally forming in the body around foreign objects such as a breast implant. Over time, the capsules can thicken, tighten, and even form hard calcifications. Here you can see the old silicone breast implant with a very tough, hardened, and calcified capsule. The capsule was completely removed with the implant and then opened up on the back table. If you look closely, you can see the calcifications which can lead to firmness, distortion, and pain. Treatment for this is removal of the old implant and removal of the capsule. If the patient desires, a brand new implant can be placed at the same time, or they can elect to no longer have implants. Breast implants have a finite life once placed in the body and close follow up with a plastic surgeon is recommended to avoid these complications.
