ECT is recommended to those patients who show minimal improvement following psychotherapy and drug therapy and have severe depressive symptoms. These patients after undergoing an index course of ECT may require maintenance ECT along with pharmacological therapy or psychotherapy depending on the patient’s need. ECT like any other procedure has side effects, thus patients may require to go individual, family, or group psychotherapy to treat the remaining symptoms and cope with stress. This is helpful for the patient as it encourages them to return to normal life. Some studies show that cognitive-behavioral therapy and psychotherapies help in prolonging the antidepressant effect of ECT.
