 Left Ventricular Assist Device (LVAD)

A left ventricular assist device (LVAD) is implanted in your chest. It helps pump blood from the lower left heart chamber (left ventricle) to the rest of your body. A control unit and battery pack are worn outside your body and are connected to the LVAD through a small opening (port) in your skin. Heart transplantation is an option for patients with severe heart failure, and a left ventricular assist device, or LVAD, can help connect a patient while awaiting the transplant.
