How long is someone infectious after a viral infection?
Infectious period depends upon the virus that infected you. It is different for every virus. • Bronchitis – as long as you have symptoms of cold or flu • Chickenpox – 2 days before rash appears to 5 days after appearing • Common cold – first 2-3 days of infection (highest risk), risk remains for up to 2 weeks • Flu – 3-7 days after symptoms first appear • Measles – period between appearance of 3Cs i.e. cough, conjunctivitis, coryza and appearance of rash • Mumps – few days before to few days after the symptoms • Rubella – up to 6 days after the rash develops • Glandular fever – spreads only upon contact via saliva • Shingles – can’t spread to others • Tonsillitis – can’t spread to others
