Burkitt lymphoma is a form of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma in which cancer starts in immune cells called B-cells. Recognized as a fast growing human tumor, Burkitt lymphoma is associated with impaired immunity and is rapidly fatal if left untreated. Burkitt lymphoma from a lymph node touch preparation. You can see a mitotic figure near the middle of this histopathology diagram. Vacuoles contain lipid- so they are oil red O positive (only trivia question now - no one really does that stain anymore). Associated with MYC rearrangement but not complex karyotype. Usually rearranged with IgH (14q) but sometimes light chain (good test question to give light chain rearrangement - kappa (2p) or lambda (22q)). CD10 and BCL6 are positive but BCL2 is negative by immunohistochemistry. Ki67 proliferation index will be near 100%. Cells are pretty monomorphous but there can be a little variability.
